Snow. Lots of it!

This past weekend we had two snow storms that dumped 8 then 7 inches respectively on our driveway. Most of it was light and fluffy so the shoveling wasn't bad.

Most of it.

The 10% that wasn't was piled high at the end of our driveway by the plows on the street. This stuff can be like cement and it wasn't far off this weekend. My right hip and back have been killing me since this and even wiped out my long run on Sunday.

Back to it tomorrow with a gradually increasing hill run at 8:30 something pace on the treadmill I think.

Oh, no weigh in today since we were in Boston for the night seeing Lisa off for OR Winter Market. She left on a 6:45 am flight today and we've found it's much easier on the family if we all stay at one of the airport hotels the night before to say "goodbye" and make the wake up easier on Lisa.

8 x 2m/8:00 @ 5%

Yesterday was my second hill work out of the new season and of course I am still lagging behind what Lisa is doing right now, but that's ok.

The workout felt fine though I was breathing hard near the end of the last couple of hills. Over all I ran for 32 minutes, slightly over 4 miles, and 600 some calories.

Wednesday Workout

Yesterday I ran at the gym while Carter was swimming. Lisa came along this time also so she and I ran side by side on the treadmills.

Now, no one would describe me as a graceful runner at all but the contrast between the two of us yesterday was stark and highlighted my ugly stride beautifully. Maybe that's not the right word, but you know what I mean.

She was running about 6 minute pace while I started with 7:30 and then dropped to 7 and 6:30 finally for two miles. I looked like I was in full gallop sprinting to stay ahead of some monstrous beast with arms and legs flailing.

She looked like she was out for a Sunday morning jog in the park all the while chatting with a friend.

Anyway, she's graceful, I'm not.

Final work out numbers: 5.6 miles, 810 calories, 40 minutes or so.

Weight Loss Week 2

Another weigh in this morning and while there's not much movement it is at least in a downward direction.

Weight Today: 180.5

I'll be happy if I continue to loose a pound a week which this represents over last week.

Saturday & Sunday

The week finished fairly well for me on the work out front. Saturday was supposed to be an off day but since Lisa and Carter were going to the gym I tagged along and got 30 minutes on the treadmill.

I ran 8:30 pace starting at 1% incline and increased the incline by a point every five minutes. The total work out was worth 580 calories and some number of miles I've forgotten, not many though.

Sunday the weather was horrible so I was on the treadmill for an 8 mile long run that burned 1200 calories in 1:09. Pace for the run was a sluggish 8:31 at 1%.

Today I'm taking the day off as my legs were heavy yesterday and I'll be doing the 7:30/7/6:30 workout of last Monday tomorrow. I hope.

Cramming Miles

Not much time for a run today so I had to cram it in. I'd hoped for 5 miles but ended with 4.07 in 28 minutes for 580 calories.

Still on the treadmill, but even worse today, I ran at zero incline.

Hills on the Treadmill

I did not get to run yesterday after Carter's school started two hours late due to an ice/snow storm. I was forced to put it off a day so I ran today. Not long, but a good workout none the less.

I started out with a 5 minute warm up between 8 and 8:30. The core of the workout was a 7 x 5% @ 8 pace for 2 minutes. That's not a fast pace at all but never the less a good starting point. The hills felt good but hard.

I'd be fine until the last 15 seconds or so when I'd start looking at the time.

Total workout 560 calories, 3.5 miles, 30 minutes.

Schedule & Weigh In

I figured I'd lay out my hopeful training schedule for the next five months....

Jan - max long run of 10 miles
Feb - max long run of 15-20 miles
March - max of 20-25 miles
April - DRB 50K, long run max of 35 to 40
May - Keys 100 then time off before a long of 40 at the end of the month?
June - GMR, who knows after that.

I'm hoping to throw in some shorter racing once a month too. 5k's, 10k's, that sort of thing to regain some of my long forgotten speed (not that there ever was much of it!)

Oh yeah, weigh in today at the start of my weight loss program: 181.5lbs

Back to the Training

The last time I ran in 2008 was on 12/13 at the inov-8 opening. I didn't run again until 1/1/2009 and this begrudgingly.

I did finally get back to it because I signed up for the Keys 100 (May) and the Green Mountain Relay (June, 2-person super-ultra).

I figured I should start the new year right and get back on the wagon. ;-)

So, my training so far in the new year:

1.5 miles on the treadmill on New Year's day
3.5 miles running/playing with Carter on the bike with me 1/3
4 miles on the treadmill with some long speed thrown in on 1/5

It's a struggle to stay motivated right now, but with those events hanging over my head I will have to.
