Five Miles

Wooo, yesterday's run was pushing it a bit at 5 miles.

Once again I ran a mix of roads and power-line trail, though this time the power line section was maybe 3/4 of a mile. That was long enough to pick up a tick, though, as the access road was not completed all the way through and required some bush whacking.

The road section was flat except for one loooooong hill. The hill came between 3 and 4 miles and that's about where I started thinking 5 miles was a bit long for me at this stage.

I'm 169lbs at the moment which is great, and I think this ultimately is what made running 5 miles possible. If I was still the 196lbs I was back in January, there'd be no chance.

Today's a rest day since I have to work in Somerville, but I'll be out again tomorrow and maybe Sunday.

Vol State Starts Today!

Around 7am this morning a group of runners set off on this year's trek to the rock, 314 miles away. I wish them all the best of luck and look forward to joining them next year.

Here's a map tracking progress of the runners.

A Short Run

During lunch break today I got out the door for a short run. Since we've just moved and I don't know any of the loops yet, I really didn't know how long the run would be or what the roads/trail would be like.

It didn't end up being very long -- just 2.6 miles -- but it was all uphill on the way out via a combo of roads and newly cleared and graded power line access ways. The return trip was all road and wound through a sleepy neighborhood past a friend's home. As luck would have it, they were in their yard relaxing so I stopped for a few minutes to chat and catch up.

The power line section was actually quite nice. It looks like it goes a long way and the utility company is busy clearing more brush and improving the access roads. I can see it getting fairly sloppy in the rain, but the gravel footing is otherwise very good.

The Start of Something

Today it's exactly one week before my 39th Birthday. Since 2008 when I last attempted a 100 miler (Mother Road 100) only to fail at the 50 mile mark, I have abandoned my running in favor of a mix of self pity and stress relief.

Since that race I've run the occasional 5k, gained and lost 30lbs (I was 196lbs in January and sported a 38" waistline!), been diagnosed with Chron's Disease, attempted running comebacks, been laid off, started a new job, and moved.

There have been a lot of life changes and now I think it's about time I made another one for the good. I'm setting a big hairy audacious goal (thanks, Dr Horton, for the term) for myself:

In 2012, I will run the Vol-State run and do it in less than 3 Days

I know this sounds impossibly arrogant and presumptuous. My 100 mile best is a hair under 18 hours. I've completed only four of them. I've never run a multi-day event. I've never run in the heat of Tennessee, and I have no idea what to expect. DeWayne Satterfield holds the record at just over three days, and he has a history of ultra success that I will never be able to hold a candle to.

But none of that means I can't try. I may not achieve the goal, but for some reason I can't quite explain, I have to give it an honest try. Can I run three 100 milers on consecutive days? I guess I'll know some time next July.
